More Details

SV Technocrats India’s Rapid Moisture Meter is a portable device used to determine the moisture content of soil and aggregates quickly in the field. It operates based on the Calcium Carbide (CaC₂) reaction method, which releases acetylene gas when it comes into contact with water in the sample. The pressure generated is directly proportional to the moisture content.

Components of a Rapid Moisture Meter

  1. Pressure Chamber (Gas-tight Container) – Holds the sample and calcium carbide.

  2. Dial Gauge (Manometer) – Measures the gas pressure generated.

  3. Calcium Carbide Reagent – Reacts with moisture to produce acetylene gas.

  4. Weighing Balance – Used to measure the sample accurately.

  5. Steel Balls – Help mix the sample and reagent by shaking.

  6. Scoop and Brush – For handling the reagent and cleaning the chamber.

Working Principle

  • Chemical Reaction: CaC2+2H2O→C2H2+Ca(OH)2\text{CaC}_2 + 2H_2O \rightarrow C_2H_2 + Ca(OH)_2CaC2+2H2O→C2H2+Ca(OH)2

    • Calcium carbide reacts with moisture in the soil, forming acetylene gas (C₂H₂).

    • The gas pressure generated is measured by the dial gauge.

    • The moisture content is obtained using a conversion chart or direct gauge readings.

Testing Procedure

  1. Weigh the Soil Sample – Usually 6g to 10g of soil is used.

  2. Place the Sample in the Pressure Chamber.

  3. Add Calcium Carbide – Introduce a measured quantity using the scoop.

  4. Seal the Chamber & Shake – Shake vigorously for 1-2 minutes to mix.

  5. Record the Dial Reading – Note the pressure reading, which corresponds to moisture content (%).

  6. Cleanup – Discard the used sample safely and clean the chamber.

Applications of Rapid Moisture Meter

Field Testing of Soil & Aggregates – Used in road construction, earthworks, and concrete mix design.
Quality Control – Ensures proper moisture content for compaction and stability.
Construction Industry – Helps in adjusting water content in soil and aggregates.

Advantages

  • Fast & Portable – Provides results within 2-3 minutes.

  • No Need for Oven Drying – Unlike the Standard Oven-Drying Method, which takes 24 hours.

  • Highly Accurate – Ideal for on-site moisture control.
